To me, nothing says summer like freshly sliced watermelon.  Okay, I can think of a few other super summery things.  But watermelon is at the top of my list.  It’s crisp, it’s sweet, it’s refreshing.  It’s delicious.  And it’s pretty.

Before my daughter came along, I was the sole watermelon eater in this house.  Neither my husband nor son like watermelon and I can’t, for the life of me, figure out how this can be.  We have a family saying that my husband has taught us from his high school Latin days:  De gustibus non est disputandum.  It means there is no arguing about tastes.  And, yes, of course I agree with that statement; it’s just a little hard for me to wrap my mind around differing tastes when it comes to watermelon.  Watermelon!  How can one not like watermelon?!  Alas, my husband and son do not; and I assume there are a few other people out there in the world who don’t like it either (if you’re one of those silly people, I promise not to hold it against you).

Each summer, my daughter watches for the local watermelons to appear in our grocery store.  Each summer, when they appear, her face lights up and her eyes plead with me until a watermelon is placed in our shopping cart.  Each summer, she and I relish that first bite.  That crunch, that rush of sweet, fresh juice in our mouths.  Then we smile.  And we take another bite.  And another.  And another.

Recently, at my children’s yearly check-ups, their doctor told us that watermelon is a superfood.  I had no idea!  As if I needed another reason to love watermelon.  But it’s true.  Oh, watermelon, I love you so.

Wishing you crisp slices of watermelon or bowls of sweet berries or basketfuls of summer squash.  Whatever is growing in your garden, or whatever you find at the local farmers market or in the produce section of your grocery store…I hope you and your family enjoy every fresh, delicious bite.

From me to you, here and now…
